Van Wert Elks Hosts Successful Hoop Shoot
Van Wert Elks Lodge #1197, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks held their Annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Goedde Building, Van Wert City Schools in Van Wert. The contest was open to all boys and girls, ages 8 thru 13 and the boys and girls competed separately in their age class. All participants shoot 25 free throw shots to compete.

The contest was open to all boys and girls, ages 8 thru 13 and the boys and girls competed separately in their age class. All participants shoot 25 free throw shots to compete.
The Elks National “Hoop Shoot” is the nation’s largest co-ed sports competition and the only non-commercial sporting event conducted on a national basis. More than three million boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, from all fifty states, compete in the Elks “Hoop Shoot” contests at various levels of competition each year.
All the participants received special Hoop Shoot tee shirts, provided by sponsors, Lee’s Ace Hardware, Van Wert Propane, Lee Kinstle GM and Pizza Hut.
The first place winners of the local contest will advance to the district competition, which will be held at 1:00 pm in the King Horn Center at the Ohio Northern University on January 13, 2018.
The winners in the boys divisions are: Age 12-13 Division: Dalton Keysor, 1st place. Age 10-11 Division: Griffin McCracken, 1st place and Caden Sinn, 2nd place. Age 8-9 Division: Ryder Brown, 1st place and Broylin Sinn, 2nd place.
The winners in the girls divisions are: Age 12-13 Division: are Ashlyn Price, 1st place, Tianna Sinn, 2nd place and Breece Baltzell, 3rd place. Age 10-11 Division: Sophia Brickner, 1st place; Jazzlyn Florence, 2nd place and Riley Brown, 3rd place. Age 8-9 Division: Brenner Keysor, 1st place.

Ohio Elks Northwest District Helps Veterans
On October 21st at the Northwest District Meeting held at Lima Elks Lodge #54, several donations of personal care items and new clothing was brought in for Veterans residing at the Sandusky Ohio Veterans Home.
On October 21st at the Northwest District Meeting held at Lima Elks Lodge #54, several donations of personal care items and new clothing was brought in for Veterans residing at the Sandusky Ohio Veterans Home.
Lodges and their members donating respectively were Defiance Lodge #147, Van Wert Lodge #1197, and Toledo –Sylvania #53. Also donated were generous monetary gifts totaling $3,040 in funds allocated to our 1 North Adopted unit.
Presenting donations were North West District Association, Toledo-Sylvania Lodge #53 and Maumee/BG Lodge #1850, Fremont Lodge #169 funds remaining from the Adopt A Veteran Mud Hens Baseball Game.
Following the meeting all the collecting personal gifts along with the donation check were delivered to the Ohio Veterans Home.

Salem Elks Lodge #305 Presents NE District CP Check.

On Halloween Trick or Treat Night, the Gallipolis Elks Lodge #107 setup three separate drug awareness tables in various locations in Gallipolis. Representatives from the City Police Dept. and County Sheriff’s Dept., along with Elks members and volunteers handed out approximately 1,360 pieces of drug awareness literature to about 1,500 Trick or Treater’s. PER Walt Brown, additionally, provided over 2,700 drug awareness materials to local 4-H Clubs, City Schools, County Prosecutor’s Office, and Gallia Co. Children’s Services.

November 13, 2018 was a cold and windy day but the weather didn’t bother Newark Lodge #391 members as they took part in the Veterans Stand Down. Set up in the outdoor Canal Market area, lodge and district Veteran Chairman Tim Hamilton, ENF Chairman Kathy Wise and member Becky Underhill greeted veterans as they handed out sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, backpacks, hats and gloves as well as drug awareness information.

Kathy used the Gratitude Grant to purchase 50 sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and back packs and Becky headed an effort to collect the hats and gloves in the lodge. The lodge members donated enough items to help nearly 100 needy vets.

Van Wert Lodge Elks Lodge #1197, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks have selected Noah Carter and Noelle Heffner seniors at Van Wert High School as the recipients of the Students of the Month for October.
Students are nominated by their high schools to receive this award. Each Student of the Month receives a monetary donation along with a certificate from the Van Wert Elks Lodge #1197 with the possibility to be named the Student of the Year. Students are judged on the basis of multiple achievements – Volunteerism, Character, Leadership, Service, Citizenship and Scholastic.
This program is designed to recognize outstanding young men and women for their achievements in school and community. The Elks wish to recognize and praise those students for their accomplishments, their activities, and their contributions to society through this program.

Marysville Elks Lodge #1130 held their first Sock Hop for CP on Oct. 27th. The lodge raised $718 for Cerebral Palsy – a fabulous and groovy time was had by all Daddy-O!

Berea Elks Partner with Berea Police On DEA Drug Take Back Day
The Berea Elks Lodge #1815 partnered with Berea Police to serve as a collection site for the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This event collects unused, expired, or unwanted prescription drugs and disposes of them properly keeping our community and environment safer.
The event collected almost 50 pounds of drugs.

Athens Elks Host National Drug Take Back Day
Athens Elks Lodge #973 partnered with the DEA and the Athens Police Department on Saturday, October 27, 2018 for the National Drug Take Back Initiative. This event is where community members turn in unused, unwanted, or expired prescription medications, to be disposed of properly. It removes the medications from your home to prevent theft or misuse, as well as preventing them to end up in the water supply or environment.

Ninety two (92) pounds of prescription medications were collected from the Elks Lodge site during the day. The Athens Elks Lodge provided it's parking lot for the community event. In addition, the lodge provided lunch and soft drinks for the officers staffing the event.

Newark Elks Is Raising Drug Awareness in Community

Van Wert Elks Lodge #1197, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks recently donated $150 to the Van Wert City Fire Department. The monies are to be used for the sponsorship of the Firefighter Phil Program, which is presented to all the elementary school children in the City of Van Wert and all of the county schools. This year the program will reach 1,552 students in Grades K thru 4.

Gallipolis Elks #107 Supports Snack Pack Program
Gallipolis Elks Lodge #107 purchased and delivered 150 cases of peanut butter to the Gallia Co. Snack Pack Program. This donation was made possible by a $2,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation along with an additional $400 from the Elks.
In addition to the peanut butter, the Gallipolis Elks presented them with a $825 check. The snack pack program began in Gallia County in 2007 serving one elementary school and has expanded its program to provide snack packs to over 850 students in all elementary schools in Gallia Co., Gallia Academy Middle School and Gallia Academy High School.

On August 26th 2018 Maumee/BG, Toledo and Fremont Elks were able to provide a great day for Toledo Mud Hens baseball and food for a total of 60 people who attended the game, 21 Veterans from the Ohio Veterans home and 39 Elk members were in attendance for the game against the Columbus Clippers. Hens winning at the end 3-2. Each Veteran was also given goodies bags to take home.

Thanks to the generosity, 107 Veterans were adopted raising $4,845. Subtracting expenses a net balance of $2630 remained. Included was $400. From a Maumee/BG golf outing.
This balance will be given to the Ohio Elks 1 North Unit outside patio project at the Ohio Veterans Home. Thank you to everyone who participated. Plans are in the making for a bigger and better program for 2019.

A special dinner was served to the members prior to lodge and during the lodge meeting, members eligible for 50 and 60 year pins were recognized.

Jackson Elks Lodge #466 had Elroy the Elk ride on the new "Elroy Mobile" at the Jackson Apple Festival parade. Lodge members passed out drug awareness coloring books and materials to the children and parents along the parade route. With about a thousand people in attendance, the lodge ran out of the materials just as the parade ended, but more will be set up at the booth in front of the lodge for the remaining Apple Festival Days!

Berea Elks #1815 Take Vets to the Zoo
Berea Elks Lodge #1815 hosted their annual “Vets to the Zoo” outing, bringing approximately 45 veterans from the Louis Stokes VA Hospital at Wade Park to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for a fun day away away from the hospital.

The Berea Elks partnered with the Columbia Station V.F.W. for the third straight year to make this event a success. Veterans enjoyed free admission to the zoo, a free box lunch, and companionship from Elks and V.F.W. members throughout the day.
Several therapy dogs were also in attendance making an already amazing day even better!
Funding from this event was partly made by an Elks National Foundation Gratitude Grant.
Berea Elks #1815 Host Annual "Elktoberfest" Endowment Fundraiser
Berea Elks Lodge #1815 hosted their annual “Elktoberfest” celebrating the end of the summer and raising funds for the Ohio Elks Association Endowment. The event featured an amazing pig roast, corn hole, a craft beer and wine garden along with live music by Cougar Trap. The event raised over $700 for the endowment.

All local first responders were provided free dinner all night long and the event raised over $700 for the state endowment.
Trustees Nate Moore and Hank Nest worked hard to prepare the pig.

At Monday’s lodge meeting at the Kenton Elks Lodge #157, First Vice President Mark Ratliff presented Exalted Ruler Todd Daquino with a framed collection of William “Billy” Southworth memorabilia for which Ratliff has personally collected. Billy was a professional baseball player who started his career in 1911 for the Kenton Reds and went onto becoming the Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Billy was also a dedicated member of the Kenton Lodge and he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 1943.
The Elks is an organization that is committed to its members and one of the core principals is to quicken the American Spirit. When we think of American Spirit in terms of Sports our mind immediately goes to a game where all you need to play is a ball and stick. We are talking about the American pastime of Baseball and no matter where you go in the United States you’ll find connections to the great game, but the Kenton Elks Lodge #157 has a wonderful history with this timeless sport.
At a recent lodge meeting at the Kenton Elks Lodge #157, Ohio First Vice President Mark Ratliff presented Exalted Ruler Todd Daquino with a framed collection of William “Billy” Southworth memorabilia for which Ratliff has personally collected. Billy was a professional baseball player who started his career in 1911 for the Kenton Reds and went onto becoming the Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. He won three straight National League championships with Cardinals from 1942 to 1944, including beating the New York Yankees to win the 1942 World Series and the St. Louis Browns in 1944. Billy was also a dedicated member of the Kenton Lodge and he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 1943.

The framed collection of items includes a photo of Billy receiving his Life Membership from Past Exalted Ruler Charles R. Price, with Mike Clabaugh standing by his side. Also included is a replica 1943 Cardinals-Yankees World Series badge and a Billy Southworth Playing card.
The collection will be on display in the Kenton Lodge and you should visit our sister lodge in Upper Sandusky #83 and thank Mark for his generous and thoughtful contribution to our Elks Lodge.
