The Ohio Elks treated our Veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home (OVH) Secrist Hall with a wide variety of music and songs provided by talented Barefoot Jake McCoy.
We first met Jake at Newark Lodge a few years ago. Restrictions due to Covid we had to wait 3 long years before approval was granted to have entertainment into our Veteran facility. The entire 1 ½ hours was sing along, hand clapping, toe stomping, laughing time.
Ice cream floats were served to all.
August 4th was also the 232nd birthday of the United States Coast Guard. Two residents in house served our country. Unfortunately they were not able to join us to celebrate. Coast Guard caps and Elk best wishes were delivered to them by Tracy Activity Director.
Salem Elks #305 Work to Protect Elks Rest at Local Cemetary
Salem Elks Lodge #305 has an "Elks Rest" in the Grandview Cemetery. Standing in front of the Elk Statue are pictured Drew Green- Trustee presenting a check to Mike Farino - Superintendent of Grandview Cemetery and Jack Gilbert - Inner Guard. If you'll notice the tree on the right in the background. It is slowly rotting away. There are several large branches that are over hanging the top of the Elk. Any of them could fall at any given time and damage the statue. Through the Salem Community Foundation, we were able to obtain a $2,500 donation from our charity donations to have the tree removed.

On July 15, 2022 fugitive drug lord, Rafael Caro Quintero, was captured and is now facing extradition to the US for the notorious 1985 torture and murder of US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) undercover agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
On July 15, 2022 fugitive drug lord, Rafael Caro Quintero, was captured and is now facing extradition to the US for the notorious 1985 torture and murder of US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) undercover agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
Why do Elks care about this news?
First, it’s important to know that our Drug Enforcement Administration is working diligently day and night to protect us from the drug lords bringing drugs and counterfeit pills into our country daily.
With 295 deaths a day from drug overdose and counterfeit and fentanyl laced pills we are reminded that it is our duty as Elks, the largest drug awareness program in the US, to help bring awareness to our communities. And Ohio is a crossroads for this drug activity!!!
Secondly, the Elks DAP Red Ribbon campaign was started specifically for Agent Camarena and hundreds of red ribbons are given out each year to students by the Elks to help bring drug awareness.
If you would like more information on the Elks Red Ribbon program please email Drug Awareness State Chairman Becky Underhill, or your DAP District or Lodge Chairman. You can also find information on the Red Ribbon program or any of the DAP programs or items on Elks.org under Drug Awareness.

Following the service the Flags were taken to Jackson Township Fire Station for proper disposal.
There is nothing that shows patriotism more than the symbol of our crowning virtue, the flag of the United States of America. There is no flag on earth that is more recognizable than Old Glory. The Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee is charged with promoting Americanism within the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks by honoring local businesses who fly the flag properly with a Certificate of Honor for Properly Flying the United States flag.
On this day also, Schoedinger Funeral Home and Spence-Miller Funeral Home were presented with Certificate for Flying the Flag Properly. Air Quality Solutions, Flyers Pizza and Aladdin Shrine were additional establishments submitted for recognition and will be presented in person their Certificates.
